plinean eruption

Named for Pliny the Younger (who witnessed the destruction of Pompeii by eruptions from Mt. Vesuvius), a type of violently explosive volcanic eruption that ejects large volumes of tephra high into the atmosphere (Harris, 2000, p. 1301).
